Dr. Carla Spann Sims is a general dentist, educator, and founder of Bethany Heights Dental Care in Allen, Texas. A longtime Allen resident, she has built her career around patient-centered dentistry, education, mentorship, and service to her community.
Dr. Spann earned her Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Duke University and worked in the telecommunications field before pursuing a career in dentistry. She earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas in 2010.
In 2012, Dr. Spann founded Bethany Heights Dental Care, the first Black-owned general dentistry practice in Allen, Texas. Throughout her years in full-time private practice, she developed a reputation for a compassionate and conservative approach to dentistry. She places particular importance on patient education, preservation of natural tooth structure, prevention, and helping patients understand the full range of treatment options available to them. She has also especially enjoyed caring for patients who are anxious or fearful about dental treatment.
Today, Dr. Spann is enjoying a new chapter of her career focused increasingly on dental education. She serves as an Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry and also works with future dental hygienists at Collin College and Concorde Career College. Through these roles, she enjoys sharing both the clinical knowledge and practical experience gained throughout her years in private practice while mentoring the next generation of dental professionals.
Although she has transitioned away from the day-to-day management of Bethany Heights Dental Care and full-time clinical practice, Dr. Spann remains connected to the practice she founded. She continues to see patients in a limited clinical role and enjoys returning to the office to visit with longtime patients and see the continued growth of the team and practice.
Dr. Spann is the proud daughter of the late Calvin J. Spann, an original Tuskegee Airman pilot, whose life and legacy of service and perseverance remain an important part of her family's story.
Outside of her professional roles, Dr. Spann enjoys spending time with her family, including her husband, Rick, her adult sons, Carson and Cameron, and their dogs.
